The original film captured the year of 2017 in each family’s lives, tracing the arc of their growing seasons against the arc of their family dramas. But documentary film has a unique power to reveal dynamic change over broader swaths of time. And the lives of the Jodrey and Thibon families continue to evolve, revealing new challenges and plot twists that will intrigue and delight! In this sequel, we return ten years later, charting each family’s agricultural journey alongside their universal passage through aging, love, family and climate change.
As we envision a sequel to WEED & WINE, we also see the possibility of a part three and a part four: subsequent documentaries that return to each family in ten-year intervals. Inspired by Michael Apted’s Seven Up! series, we will return to old questions and ask new ones: How can our protagonists–or any of us–live within the comforting bonds of family and tradition, while also shrugging off the binds of old ways and habits? How do we shift focus and attention to the next generation, whose fresh ideas and search for independence may challenge—or reject—the path that has been charted by their elders? How do we chart an optimistic path toward the future, while also accepting the ravages of the past, including the ever-worsening reality of climate change?
